Audio Waveforms
Discover how sound works as a wave: sine waves, frequency, amplitude, waveform shapes, harmonics, timbre, ADSR envelopes, and digital audio sampling.
Step 1 of 10
What Is Sound?
Sound is a mechanical wave — a vibration that travels through air (or another medium) as a pattern of compressions and rarefactions. When a guitar string vibrates, it pushes air molecules back and forth, creating pressure waves that your ear converts into the experience of hearing. No medium, no sound — which is why space is silent.
